A beautiful destination.

Life is full of wonderful things. We can pursue our passion, fall in love, get married, have a family, write a book, a screenplay or a movie, travel the world or do whatever the hell we want. When we have all of these wonderful things in life, but it’s easy to forget what disappointment feels like.

And when disappointment rears its ugly head—boy does it suck. It can have you feeling alone, depressed, lost, confused, and like a straight up failure. My life is not a top hit right now—in fact it’s quite the opposite.

We’ve all felt disappointment in our lives—but lately it seems that each disappointment is worse than the last. No one tells you how much it sucks experiencing disappointment as an adult feels like. It sucks.

It can have you questioning what you did for the last four years in school, your relationship, past, future, passions, fears, and desires.

I’m not writing this to whine—I’m writing this to give myself some perspective.

My friend Megan said something brilliant to me. She said, “You know what? You don’t start to achieve career success until your late 20’s or early 30’s.”

Not that you can’t be successful any younger than that—but the point is, you will try many different things up until that point. You will face some major wrong turns before that. I'm in the bad part of town right now.

In other words, YOU’RE GOING TO MESS UP—and like it or not, those wrong turns eventually got you to a destination. Maybe not the destination you anticipated, but a destination nonetheless.

Messing up will make you feel lousy. It will sting your soul and break your heart—because you feel like you were finally getting somewhere. You will hate yourself temporarily and ask yourself, “Why did I mess this up?” "Why can’t I do this right? "How any times do I have to screw this up before I learn?"  What am I supposed to do?” "I was so close, but why was it taken away from me?”

And you won’t know the answer to those questions, until you seek the answers. You can’t see the world, if you never get out of the house, your vehicle, or your comfort zone, you'd never see anything other than your own backyard.

Those wrong turns allow you travel throughout your life seeing some of the most interesting, scary, and breathtaking sites of your life. You might find yourself in a bad neighborhood once in a while, seeing one of the seven wonders of the world, or viewing a unique piece of history.

This is part of your journey. I’m still lost from all my wrong turns—but eventually I’ll get to where I'm going.
